Sherry J. Oswalt Oswalt. Console Tables. December 07th , 2017.
Contemporary console tables have been created in so many sizes and shapes they can fit any space you need to put them into. If you just need a small table to show off a collectible in your home, that is not a problem for contemporary tables. You will be able to find a table that may almost seem like a pedestal display that came right out of a museum. Additionally if you are a little cramped for space, but would like to add a little more display area to a room, you can probably find an unused corner. Contemporary tables will be able to fit right into this little bit of available space and offer you the surface area you were looking for without taking away from the precious usable square footage you had left in the room.
To start with though, contemporary console tables will have one pretty basic design with simple lines, giving the furnishing a very sleek appearance. Sometimes there will be small design elements like softer lines or curves, but that is just every now and again. The different materials and finishes that come into play are what really put the look of contemporary console tables over the top. For example, you can get one that is made using both glass and metal with a base crafted from steel that has a chrome finish supporting a slightly black tinted table top. Or, you could purchase one that is crafted from pine that has a rich, black finish with a slight semi-glass appearance.
While many people only see console tables as pieces that would go in the living room, they can really be spread throughout the house to offer a number of storage opportunities. You could place one console table in the entryway, as a place to put away keys, the mail, or other small items you may regularly have as you walk in and out of the house. This would be a great place for a more ornate console table. It could have one drawer to put those little items out of the way, but the rest could be a beautiful piece of wrought iron or hand tooled wood that will put visitors in awe as soon as they step in the door.
A tiered look is also very modern and although similar to shelves, the tiers usually overlap the legs. Legs and tiers are then made of unusual material combinations, such as glass and aluminum or wicker and wrought iron. The tiers may also be held on with obviously over-large bolts or placed on legs of curled wrought iron or ornamental aluminum.
The obvious pieces of furniture you are going to likely get for the living room are a sofa, possibly a loveseat and other chairs and seating options for your guests. Then you will likely get a coffee table, and many people also want matching end tables. But this is where you may want to put on the brakes. While end tables are nice, if you are going to do a lot of entertaining in this room, you should probably think of furniture pieces that will help you do that. Sure, end tables will give you a place to put a drink or two, but console tables can offer a lot more. In addition to adding countertop space, console tables can also offer a lot of storage space to put things you will need to have close at hand when you are entertaining, such as coasters for those drinks that are about to be set down.
